Blackjack Card Values

A blackjack player needs to understand the basics of the game in order to play blackjack. Sometimes a player may be dealt with numbers of the same value. In blackjack getting a suit is not relevant to the game. What is important in the game is your card point value as well as that of the hand.

If you play blackjack, you should have a target and that is aiming a point value that is more than that of the dealer but should not be more than 21. You should also ensure that you did not bust.

Ace

The point value of an ace card is 1. It can also be 11 points and this gives the player an edge. A soft hand refers to a hand that holds an ace card. This is called soft hand because the player will not bust if he gets a hit. Here the ace will have a point value of 1.

Face Cards

There are some cards that have the point value of 10. These cards are known as the face cards. They include:

  • Queen
  • Jack
  • King

Other Cards

The point value of other cards is equivalent to the number written on the card. If the number written on a card is 5 for instance, the point value of the card is five.

Important cards

In blackjack, the most important cards are cards with the numerical value of 10. Certain reasons explain that. One of the reasons behind the importance of cards with the value of 10 is that they are the majority in the deck of cards. 15 cards out of the total of 52 cards in the deck are 10's. Each of the other cards is four.

Another reason that accounts for the importance of the 10 is the fact that when you are dealt with 10 and then an ace, you have automatically gotten a point value of 21 also known as 21. Such point value has a payout of 3:2. This brightens the player's edge.

Another important card in blackjack, but not as important as 10, is 5. You can easily get a stiff hand when you are dealt with a five. You can also get a hand that will make it possible for you to bust when you are dealt with 5. However, when you are dealt with all the four cards with the value of 5, the odds of winning will go to your side rather than to the house's side.

The cards value mentioned above - 5 and 10 - makes it possible for card counting to possible in blackjack.
